Our barn owl box project, launched just over two years ago, has just produced results! One of the boxes has six owlets in it, and they were expertly ringed this week by Richard and Trevor from the ringing group. Three owlets were discovered and ringed at the same site two years ago, but they were on a pile of hay bales near but not actually in the box. No results at the other four boxes, although it look as as though one was used for winter roosting, which could mean it will be used next year. Here are some photos of the owl ringing process.
Whilst in our area Richard and Trevor also checked a nearby Owl Box known to host owl breeding in previous years. Here there were possibly four owlets but only about two weeks old therefore too young to be ringed. This demonstrated quite a difference in egg laying timing between the two sites.
