Water keeps hitting the headlines. This summer our fields have dried out and smoke from distant wildfires has drifted across the landscape, but in recent years we have also had prolonged downpours, standing waves in fast-flowing lanes and floods in the Wye. So the next Parish Grasslands Project meeting, at 2.30.pm on October 17th in the Mackenzie Hall, will be about local water. Our previous meeting on water covered everything from water divining to uses for grey water. This one will consider past and present… and perhaps the future.
Andy Stott will talk about local hydrology, which will deal with the geology, rainfall, water tables, spring-lines of the area. George Peterken will talk about what he has discovered about how local water has been used in the past, when it was the only source of drinking water for ourselves and farm stock. What happened, for example, when the Spout in Brockweir ran dry in a drought? Robin Pittson will talk about the Wye, its poor condition and how he and others have monitored it in recent years.
In each case, we will be aiming for short talks that leave enough time for others to ask questions and add their recollections and opinions. Like all PGP events, there will be no charge for admission and all are welcome, members and non-members.
