Come along to find out about the wonderful world of moths at two family-friendly events on Saturday the 4th of July. Both are free and run from 10am till noon, one at the playground at Brockweir Village Shop and the other at the community orchard at St Briavels Playing Field. At both venues you will be able to see live examples of a whole range of these fascinating and often beautiful creatures.
When you enter the world of moths there is an amazing amount of diversity to be discovered. There are around 2,500 moth species in the UK, and they come in an incredible variety of colours, patterns and shapes. Only two UK species do damage to natural fibres such as wool, and it is not the actual moths but the larvae, the developing eggs, that are responsible. The vast majority of moths fly at night, but more than 150 species can be seen during the day. Moths are important pollinators, a vital food source for other wildlife and a valuable indicator of the health of their environment. Sadly, many of our moths are struggling — but you can help! Our gardens can be a haven for both flying adults and their hungry caterpillars.
The moths at our two events will have been “humanely” caught nearby in traps and transported to the two sites for “the Great Reveal”. Come and see close-up some of the many different species that live right here on our doorstep. Trapping does not harm the moths, which will fly away when it gets dark.
All ages are welcome, come and find out about these remarkable creatures and about what we can do to give them a helping hand. This event is organised jointly by the local Biodiversity Working Group and the Parish Grasslands Project. You can contact us at parishgrasslands@gmail.com
